Holter Monitoring
A Holter monitor records the heart’s electrical activity during normal daily life.
About this test
A Holter monitor records the heart’s electrical activity during normal daily life.
Your physician uses the results alongside your symptoms, history and other testing to guide next steps.
Preparing for your appointment
How to prepare
Bathe before your appointment because most monitors cannot be removed or exposed to water during the recording period. Avoid oily lotions and continue regular medications unless your physician advises otherwise.
What to expect
Electrodes are attached to your chest and connected to a small portable recorder. You may be asked to keep a diary of activities and symptoms and to press an event button when symptoms occur.
Returning the monitor
Follow the technician’s instructions for removal and return the equipment at the specified time so the recording can be analyzed.
